Soybean crushing rises in December as canola and cottonseed oil production dips

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reported that soybean crushing for crude oil reached 6.90 million tons (230 million bushels) in December 2025, up from 6.62 million tons in November and 6.53 million tons in December 2024. Crude oil production from soybeans rose 5% from November to 2.66 billion pounds and was 3% higher than December 2024.

Soybean once refined oil production also increased 5% from November, totaling 1.91 billion pounds, though it was down 1% compared to the previous year.

In contrast, canola seed crushing dropped to 193,387 tons in December 2025, compared with 205,495 tons in November and 223,154 tons a year earlier. Canola crude oil production fell 9% from November and 13% from December 2024, totaling 151 million pounds. However, canola once refined oil production rose slightly to 173 million pounds, up 3% from November.

Cottonseed once refined oil production declined sharply by 22% from November to 24.5 million pounds and was down 19% from December 2024.

Animal fats showed mixed results. Edible tallow production decreased 23% from November but increased 16% year over year to 87.6 million pounds. Inedible tallow production fell 7% from November but rose 5% from the prior year, totaling 316 million pounds. Technical tallow production dropped 23% from November and 14% from December 2024.

Choice white grease production slightly declined 1% from November but increased 6% year over year to 108 million pounds.
