The Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board (WSMB) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the state's soybean industry by approving several cutting-edge research projects for fiscal year 2025. The decision, made during the board's February meeting at the Kalahari Resort & Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells, underscores WSMB's commitment to driving innovation and profitability for Wisconsin soybean farmers.
Jonathan Gibbs, WSMB president, emphasized the board's focus on funding tools to increase farmer profitability. "We seek to sponsor projects that look ahead to battle production challenges and ultimately improve our bottom line," Gibbs stated.
Key approved projects include:
Continuation of University of Wisconsin Extension research, covering:
- Development of an insect dynamics isoline map for real-time local pest density prediction
- Pest monitoring using award-winning insect eavesdropper technology
- White mold control strategies
Support for the Wisconsin Soybean Yield Contest, which saw record participation in 2024
New research initiatives:
- Analysis of soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistance
- Pest and agronomic decision support powered by the Wisconet weather station network
Dr. Shawn Conley, a University of Wisconsin researcher, will oversee multiple checkoff-supported projects, including the Yield Contest.
The board's rigorous selection process required proposals to include project outlines, communication plans, deliverables, timelines, and budgets. Approved contracts will be valid for one year, ensuring focused and timely research outcomes.
