KWCH's Matt Heilman and staff reported on a Monday night fire that prompted a heavy emergency response to the Cargill plant in Wichita, Kansas.
The initial emergency call, made a little after 9 p.m., dispatched crews to the scene of heavy smoke in the area near the Cargill plant. Once on scene, the call was upgraded to a second alarm due to the smoke conditions coming from the Cargill plant. The smoke and heat conditions necessitated an aerial attack.
Wichita fire crews remained at the scene through Monday night and continued to monitor the scene on Tuesday. As of Tuesday morning, the scene remained active as crews fought to keep the fire from reigniting.
Local response teams are working with Cargill management and the fire is under investigation.
