The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has given the green light for a noncompetitive sale of approximately 30 acres of public lands in San Bernardino County to BNSF Railway. This land transfer is a crucial step towards the development of the Barstow International Gateway project, a massive $1.5 billion integrated rail facility spanning about 4,500 acres.

Key aspects of the project and land sale include:

  1. The facility aims to streamline the transfer of goods from international to domestic containers.
  2. An estimated 20,000 new jobs are expected to be created.
  3. The project is designed to address ongoing logistics and supply chain challenges.
  4. Potential reduction in freeway congestion around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
  5. The public land, valued at $98,000, was identified as suitable for private sale by the BLM Barstow Field Office.

The land sale adheres to the provisions of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 and BLM land sale regulations. The BLM noted that the parcel is isolated, surrounded by private lands, and challenging for the agency to provide public access.

Interested parties can access the decision record, environmental assessment, and related documents through the BLM National NEPA Register or by visiting the BLM Barstow Field Office during business hours. The office is located at 2601 Barstow Road in Barstow, CA 92311, and can be contacted at 760-252-6000 for visitation arrangements.

This land sale approval marks a significant step forward for the Barstow International Gateway project, which promises to bring substantial economic benefits to the region while addressing critical infrastructure and logistics needs in Southern California.
