On December 17, the Board of Commissioners for the Port of New Orleans authorized the Port to acquire a new property in Violet, LA, 7.5 miles southeast of New Orleans.

As part of the Port’s long-term infrastructure investment, the new $1.5 billion multimodal container terminal will be developed on the property. According to the Port’s website, demand for container business at the Port has doubled since 2010.

To accommodate this growing business, the Port is in the process of adding four new 100-gauge gantry cranes and improving its facilities.

The new downriver terminal in Violet is expected to enhance the Port’s capacity to handle rising demand and support ancillary logistics.

Over the next two years, the Port plans to work closely with the public and stakeholders to review traffic and environmental concerns and to identify potential alternatives.
