Bunge Loders Croklaan, the plant-based lipids business of Bunge, plans to build a state-of-the-art, sustainable production facility in the Port of Amsterdam.

When completed in 2024, the plant will replace the Maasvlakte refinery in Rotterdam that was sold at the end of last year. Production at the current Bunge Loders Croklaan location in Wormerveer will also be moving to this new facility.

Bunge is planning to invest over €300 million in the construction of the new facility on the HoogTij industrial area in the Port of Amsterdam. It’s an important next step in optimizing Bunge’s European asset footprint and will also allow Bunge to reach greater operational flexibility and efficiency.

“The new facility enables us to offer a broader and more innovative product portfolio of sustainable plant-based oils and fats that better positions us to meet future market demand,” says David Vandermeersch, vice president EMEA Bunge Loders Croklaan.

“The new plant will be built according to the latest technological standards, resulting in a highly efficient and sustainable facility with direct energy savings of 40% and an expected CO2 reduction of 90% by 2030.”

Construction is expected to begin at the end of 2022 and to be completed by the end of 2024. The company’s current production location along the Zaan in Wormerveer will move to the new location in phases during 2025.
