The Havre Daily News staff reported that crews demolished two historic grain elevators in Havre, Montana, removing structures that had stood for more than 100 years.
The larger elevator came down Sept. 24, followed by a smaller structure Sept. 29. Both demolitions drew crowds of onlookers who watched the end of an era for the community’s skyline.
Local historian Emily Mayer said the elevators represented community hope and optimism during their construction. The original elevator was built by H. Earl Clack in 1912 as the first grain facility in the area, though it was rebuilt twice after fires in 1922 and 1930.
The structures were abandoned in 1982 when Centennial Mills built a modern concrete elevator east of town. Clean-up at the demolition site is now complete.
