Residents complain of loud noise from pet food plant in Halifax County, Virginia

Sunshine Mills working with town to reduce noise affecting nearby homes.

WSLS 10's Jason Freund reported that residents near Sunshine Mills Inc., a pet food manufacturing plant, say excessive noise has disturbed their sleep for years. Malik Hussein, who lives close to the plant, said the noise worsened after new equipment was installed in 2024. Neighbor Keith Washo measured noise levels reaching up to 63 decibels, exceeding typical healthy limits.

Halifax Town Manager Carl Espy said the town has communicated with Sunshine Mills, which has made modifications to reduce noise. A new fluidizer system is planned for installation in November to further address the issue. The plant confirmed it is working with the town to resolve the problem.

“We don’t want to hear this all night,” Hussein said, urging a swift fix to the ongoing noise disturbance.
