Firefighters Blame Squatters for Vacant Elevator Fires

Makeshift homeless camps create series of fires in north Wichita, KS, grain elevator

Fire 836635 960 720

The latest in a series of fires at a north Wichita grain elevator has firefighters calling for change, reports KAKE.

The lower floor of an elevator near 17th St N and Broadway caught fire at around 11:30 Friday morning. While the vacant containers are not at risk of exploding, firefighters say fires are reported there all too often.

"This isn't the first time we've been out here," Wichita Fire Battalion Chief Lane Pearman told KAKE. "We've been out here multiple times over the last two or three months."

The chief said the cause of these fires are people who are homeless setting up makeshift camps inside places that should be blocked off.
