Rain Delays Vancouver Grain Loading

Vessel loading during rain has been stopped over safety concerns

Storm 642637

Bloomberg's Jen Skerritt reported on an ongoing issue at Vancouver's grain terminals. Since January, workers have been forced to stop loading grain on vessels during the rain due to safety concerns.

An arbitrator ruled earlier this year that guardrails must be erected it workers are going to load during the rain and the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association has brought up concerns over electrical grounding. Until these issues are taken care of, every time it rains in one of Canada's wettest cities workers are forced to stop work.

So far the port has been able to keep up with incoming grain shipments, but Vancouver is entering it's wettest season. The new safety equipment will start being tested early 2019.
