Another African Swine Fever Outbreak Forces Chinese Farm oo Cull 20,000 Hogs
One of China’s largest hog breeders, Da Bai Nong, culled around 20,000 live hogs and sows in an attempt to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF). This would mark the largest single culling of hogs due to ASF as the virus continues to be confirmed on farms in China and Eastern Europe. ASF is not harmful to humans but is fatal to swine. A viral outbreak for a major hog producing company marks a shift in ASF’s spread as it had primarily been affecting smaller-scale operations. The Chinese government has put in place stringent controls on the shipping of live hogs and feed around the country in order to halt the spread of the disease. So far in China, 32 cities have been forced to cull swine. Recent outbreaks have been primarily in Liaoning province, one of the largest hog producing provinces in China. Half of the world’s hogs are estimated to be in China.
