Egg production in Brazil is forecast to reach 56.9 billion units by year end, an increase of 8.5% compared to 2023, according to the industry body the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
The association notes that consumption in the country will also rise by 8.5% to stand at 263 eggs per capita, its highest level ever.
Exports decline
While the country’s egg production may be growing, its exports have declined this year and ABPA forecasts that they will fall to 20,000 metric tons (MT) by the end of the year, a decrease of 20%. This decline follows a spike in exports to a record high in 2023.
Commenting on the decrease, Ricardo Santin, ABPA president, said, “We had a fist half with relatively strong demand on the home market which reduced the need for the sector to export.”
World’s fifth largest egg producer
Between 1997 and 2023 Brazilian egg production quadrupled, leading it to become the world’s fifth largest producer. Over the same period, per capita consumption in the country rose from 82 eggs each year to 242.
ABPA reports that the egg sector’s output was worth R$24.5 billion (US$4.5 billion) in 2023, with 99% of output being destined for the home market.
For 2025, the association estimates that production will continue to grow, but at a much slower pace than in 2024, expanding by 1% to reach 57.5 billion units. Exports, however, are predicted to rise by 10% to stand at 22,000 MT.
