NOVUS launches soybean meal testing service

New tool helps feed manufacturers assess ingredient quality before use.

NOVUS has launched the NOVUS Ingredient Assessment Service (NIAS), giving poultry and swine producers a new way to evaluate soybean meal quality before adding it to animal diets.

The service uses Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIR) to estimate trypsin inhibitor (TI) levels in soybean meal. Trypsin inhibitors are anti-nutritional factors that can affect protein digestion and amino acid availability in livestock.

“Ingredient variability is a reality for nutritionists and feed manufacturers,” says Silvia Peris, NOVUS executive regional technical services manager for EMEA. “Knowing more about the soybean meal they are working with can support more informed decisions.”

NIAS is currently available to select customers in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with plans to expand to other regions. Operating models are tailored to each market, including partnerships with external labs and use of customers’ in-house facilities.

The service provides more than just TI values. NOVUS Technical Services experts offer context on how TI levels may influence amino acid digestibility and provide recommendations to address challenges. Results are compared with the NOVUS Global Trypsin Inhibitor Database of more than 3,000 samples, giving customers a benchmark for monitoring ingredient variability and supplier consistency.

“Providing a number alone is not the objective,” says David Torres, NOVUS senior regional technical services manager for Asia. “The value comes from helping customers understand what that number means for their operation.”

The service reflects over 10 years of NOVUS data collection on trypsin inhibitor levels in soybean samples from around the world.
