CPM|Crown announced Monarc Clean Oilseed Processing™, a patent-pending alcohol-based solvent extraction technology designed to rival traditional hexane systems in operational efficiency while offering significant safety, environmental and consumer benefits.
Hexane-based extraction has long been the industry standard for producing cooking oils and protein meals essential to global food supply. Monarc provides producers the option to use alcohol-based solvents like ethanol, which are renewable, safer for workers, and better aligned with sustainability goals.
“Alcohol is already present in many foods and beverages, enabling clean-label products that appeal to health-conscious consumers,” said Kris Knudson, Crown president. He highlighted over five years of development backed by advanced simulation and extensive testing.
Dave MacLennan, former Cargill CEO and CPM board member, called Monarc “game-changing” for its safety and clean-label advantages.
CPM|Crown completed its first commercial sale of Monarc in 2025, with installation planned in Europe. Customers can test the technology at CPM|Crown’s Global Innovation Center.
