Combined U.S. and Canadian wheat ground for flour reaches 1.04 billion bushels, with total flour production up to 480 million hundredweight.

Flour And Wheat

The total amount of wheat ground for flour in the United States and Canada reached 1.04 billion bushels in 2024, a 1% increase from the previous year, according to the "North American Flour Milling Products 2024 Summary" released in May 2025. This joint publication by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) and Statistics Canada also reported that combined flour production rose to 480 million hundredweight (cwt) in 2024, up from 476 million cwt in 2023.

The increase in North American figures was largely due to higher U.S. production, which offset a slight decline in Canadian milling activity. Key findings from the report include:

  • Combined All Wheat:

    • Wheat ground for flour: 1.037 billion bushels in 2024, up from 1.027 billion bushels in 2023.

    • Flour production: 480.1 million cwt in 2024, compared to 475.7 million cwt in 2023.

    • Millfeed production: 7.29 million tons in 2024, a slight decrease from 7.30 million tons in 2023.

  • Combined Durum Wheat:

    • Wheat ground for flour and semolina: 73.4 million bushels in 2024, up less than 1% from 73.0 million bushels in 2023.

    • Durum flour production: 35.3 million cwt in 2024, a 2% increase from 34.7 million cwt in 2023.

In the United States:

  • All wheat ground for flour increased to 915.7 million bushels in 2024 from 904.5 million bushels in 2023.

  • U.S. flour production rose to 425.2 million cwt from 420.0 million cwt.

  • U.S. millfeed production saw a slight increase to 6.49 million tons from 6.47 million tons.

  • U.S. durum wheat ground for flour was 65.3 million bushels, up from 64.8 million bushels, yielding 31.5 million cwt of flour, up from 30.9 million cwt.

In Canada:

  • All wheat ground for flour decreased to 121.6 million bushels in 2024 from 122.6 million bushels in 2023.

  • Canadian flour production subsequently fell to 54.9 million cwt from 55.7 million cwt.

  • Canadian millfeed production decreased to 801,751 tons from 827,407 tons.

  • Canadian durum wheat ground for flour was 8.0 million bushels, down from 8.2 million bushels, resulting in 3.7 million cwt of flour, down from 3.8 million cwt.

The report compiles data previously released by each country, with U.S. flour milling production numbers for 2024 issued on May 1, 2025, and Canadian figures released on April 30, 2025.
