The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released it's newest Fats and Oils: Oilseed Crushings, Production, Consumption and Stocks and Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production, providing insights into grain crushings, co-products production, and oilseed processing for March 2025.
Grain crushings and co-products production
Total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses reached 504 million bushels in March, marking an 8% increase from February but a 4% decrease compared to March 2024. Key findings include:
- Alcohol production accounted for 92.2% of total corn usage
- Corn for fuel alcohol rose to 454 million bushels, up 8% from February but down 4% year-over-year
- Beverage alcohol production saw a 39% monthly increase to 4.21 million bushels
Co-product output showed varied results:
- Distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) production reached 1.81 million tons, up 7% month-over-month but down 7% year-over-year
- Wet mill corn gluten feed production totaled 260,584 tons, a 14% increase from February but a 4% decrease from the previous year
Oilseed crushings and production
The report on fats and oils revealed significant growth in oilseed crushing and oil production:
- Soybean processing:
- Soybeans crushed for crude oil: 6.20 million tons (207 million bushels), up from 5.69 million tons in February
- Crude oil produced: 2.47 billion pounds, up 10% from February and 3% from March 2024
- Refined oil production: 1.88 billion pounds, up 16% month-over-month and 5% year-over-year
- Canola processing:
- Canola seeds crushed: 200,953 tons, compared to 154,734 tons in February
- Crude oil produced: 160 million pounds, up 33% from February and 6% from March 2024
- Refined oil production: 173 million pounds, up 34% month-over-month and 11% year-over-year
- Other fats and oils:
- Cottonseed refined oil: 31.8 million pounds, up slightly from February but down 19% year-over-year
- Edible tallow: 80.9 million pounds, down 13% from February and 12% from March 2024
- Inedible tallow: 338 million pounds, down 2% month-over-month and 5% year-over-year
- Technical tallow: 126 million pounds, down slightly from February but up 12% from March 2024
- Choice white grease: 100 million pounds, down 8% from February and 9% from March 2024
These statistics provide valuable insights into the current state of grain and oilseed processing, reflecting the industry’s dynamic nature and ongoing market trends. The significant growth in oilseed crushing and oil production, particularly in soybean and canola processing, indicates a robust demand for vegetable oils and related products.
