In the highly competitive and scrutinized animal feed industry, trust remains paramount. Today, farmers and livestock producers rely on feed manufacturers not just for quality nutrition but also for transparency, reliability and a commitment to their success.

However, this is not always what customers receive. Ensuring that customers realize the feed manufacturer prioritizes their interests and does not compromise quality for profit requires deliberate and consistent effort. Here are 10 ways feed manufacturers can build and maintain trust with their clients based on my experience working worldwide with feed manufacturers and animal producers.

1. Ensure full transparency in ingredient sourcing

Customers need to know what goes into the feed they purchase. Providing full transparency regarding ingredient origins, quality control measures and supplier standards reassures customers that the manufacturer prioritizes quality over cost cutting.

Even when a less-expensive alternative becomes available — and there might be some risk taking —  it is always best to let your trusted customers know beforehand. In our industry, it is difficult to disclose ingredient sources on packaging or through QR codes leading to detailed sourcing information. Perhaps this will become the norm one day, but we are not there yet. Instead, letting customers know that you partner with well-regarded, certified suppliers and communicate these relationships to customers is the best course.

2. Implement and showcase stringent quality control measures

Feed manufacturers should go beyond regulatory requirements and establish internal quality control processes that exceed industry standards — and communicate this effort to their clients. This should include:

  • Regular testing for contaminants, nutrient accuracy and feed safety.
  • Third-party verification and certification from suitable organizations.
  • Publishing quality assurance reports to provide confidence in product consistency.

3. Be open about formulation principles

This is not the open formulation idea that some legislators proposed years ago. Customers want assurance that formulations are designed for optimal animal health and performance rather than solely for cost efficiency. Just knowing who formulates their feeds is often enough. Transparency in formulation principles can build trust by:

  • Clearly explaining the nutritional rationale behind feed compositions.
  • Offering evidence-backed justifications for ingredient and additive choices.
  • Avoiding drastic formulation changes without proper communication and reasoning.

4. Avoid undisclosed reformulations

Nobody likes a surprise when things go bad. Sudden changes in feed composition without informing customers can damage trust, especially if these changes affect animal performance. Instead, feed manufacturers should:

  • Communicate formulation updates well in advance.
  • Provide a transition plan when reformulating products.
  • Ensure that any cost-saving reformulations do not compromise animal health and productivity.
  • Share any cost savings with the customers.

5. Establish strong customer support and technical services

A responsive and knowledgeable technical support team reassures customers that the company values their business beyond just selling feed. Key actions include:

  • Offering expert nutritional consultations to help customers optimize feed usage.
  • Training sales representatives to provide real, science-backed advice rather than just promoting products.
  • Providing dedicated helplines or online chat support to address concerns swiftly.

6. Invest in scientific research and share findings

Manufacturers who invest in research demonstrate their commitment to advancing animal nutrition. Some view this as an expense, especially when results are published in publicly available platforms, like a scientific journal. But others see this as an investment and will:

  • Conduct trials to validate feed efficacy and share the results with customers.
  • Partner with universities and independent research institutions.
  • Publish findings in reputable industry journals or through easily accessible white papers.

7. Use high-quality raw materials and prove it

Cutting costs by using inferior raw materials is a major concern among customers. Quality manufacturers must prove they prioritize quality by:

  • Conducting and publishing raw material quality test results.
  • Offering customers access to third-party certification results.
  • Avoiding low-cost, controversial ingredients that have inconsistent nutritional values.

8. Provide real-time traceability and batch tracking

Modern feed manufacturers can leverage technology to enhance traceability and reassure customers about product integrity. They achieve that by:

  • Implementing batch tracking systems that allow customers to trace their feed’s production date, ingredients and test results.
  • Using blockchain or other digital tools to ensure transparency and data integrity.
  • Offering mobile apps or online portals for customers to verify their feed’s quality.

9. Maintain competitive yet justified pricing

Most customers are willing to pay for quality but do not appreciate unjustified price hikes. To this end, manufacturers should:

  • Provide clear explanations for pricing adjustments, linking them to raw material costs or regulatory changes or manufacturing costs.
  • Avoid unnecessary reductions in quality to maintain low prices, as this can backfire in the long term.
  • Offer loyalty programs or bulk discounts to reward long-term customers without compromising feed quality.

10. Encourage independent reviews and customer testimonials

Word-of-mouth and peer recommendations carry significant weight in the agricultural sector. To build trust:

  • Encourage satisfied customers to share testimonials on public platforms.
  • Allow independent farm trials and case studies to showcase feed performance.
  • Be open to and responsive to positive and negative feedback.

Building trust in the feed manufacturing business requires continuous effort, transparency and genuine customer-focused practices.

By prioritizing customer interests, implementing stringent quality controls and maintaining open communication, manufacturers can establish themselves as reliable partners rather than mere suppliers.

Trust takes time to build but can be lost in an instant — ensuring long-term integrity is the key to sustaining and growing a successful feed business.
