Corporations have been making sustainability pledges in various forms for decades, but they’ve recently become necessary in today’s business landscape, even for animal feed producers. Companies that fail to address their views on sustainability stand to lose market share to competitors whose values align with environmentally conscious customers, while investors and regulators will increasingly expect proof a company is reaching its sustainability targets.

Early examples of environmental commitments date to the 1970s, with 3M’s Pollution Prevention Pays (3P), encouraging cost-saving projects that eliminate pollution through product design and manufacturing practices. Evolving over time, modern sustainability pledges emphasize the quantifiable reduction of globally significant climate-changing factors, such as carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
