  • Colder temperatures set in
  • Corn harvest nears completion
  • Winter wheat planting season closes

Weather and harvest updates

The USDA’s November 22 bulletin reports nationwide cold and dry conditions with exceptional snowfalls in the Great Lakes and Northeast regions. Areas in the eastern Great Lakes saw averages around 2 feet while further west received fewer yet notable snowfall totals as well.

Most of the western half of the country to the Northern plains saw insignificant amounts of precipitation. Dryness combined with colder than average temperatures caused weakened soil conditions for pastures and winter wheat.

  • Winter wheat is 96% planted, 3 points above five-year average
  • 87% of winter wheat has emerged, one point above the five-year average. 32% is in good to excellent condition, 12 points behind last year
  • Corn harvest nears completion
  • 96% of corn is harvested, 6 points above the five-year average
