North Dakota Soybean Pile Draws Senate Race Attention

Confusion surrounds soybean pile outside Maple River Grain & Agronomy in Casselton

Terry Johnson isn’t sure why the soybean pile outside Maple River Grain & Agronomy became a political issue, reports AgWeek.

The pile, Maple River’s CEO explained on Nov. 5, is part of the elevator’s infrastructure and should be loaded onto four trains by Thanksgiving.

The pile, however, has become a talking point between Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and her Republican challenger Rep. Kevin Cramer. During their October 26 debate, the senator mentioned the soybeans and her concern for the "unsold" commodity. This sparked a back-and-forth between the two camps for several days.

Johnson said the soybeans at Maple River Grain either have been sold or are being stored.
