The Duluth News Tribune's Jimmy Lovrien reported that The Port of Duluth-Superior secured a significant $27 million federal grant Thursday to advance a major infrastructure project that will transform nearly a quarter mile of dock wall and create new port facilities on Rice’s Point.

The U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the funding through its Port Infrastructure Development Program to rebuild dock walls, demolish an old grain elevator and install new utilities on the former Duluth Lake Port dock property. The grant will be matched by $8.4 million in previously secured state and local funding, bringing the total project cost to $38 million.

Construction is expected to begin within 12 to 18 months after finalizing the grant agreement with the U.S. Maritime Administration.
