Cross Plains Solutions, in collaboration with the soy checkoff, has developed SoyFoam™ TF 1122, a firefighting foam that is the first to achieve GreenScreen Certified® Gold status, offering a safer alternative to traditional firefighting foams that contain harmful PFAS chemicals. This innovative product is made from soy flour and is 100% free of intentionally added PFAS, offering environmental and health safety benefits.
Steve Reinhard, an Ohio farmer and chair of the United Soybean Board, emphasized the significance of SoyFoam™ in protecting firefighters from harmful chemicals while also supporting sustainable agricultural practices. Reinhard, who also served as a volunteer firefighter for 23 years, highlighted the dual benefits of the product for both the firefighting community and soybean farmers.
The development of SoyFoam™ not only aids in protecting over one million U.S. firefighters by reducing their exposure to carcinogens but also opens up new markets for soybean meal, which comprises 80% of the crushed bean. The product is currently being produced at Cross Plains Solutions’ manufacturing plant in Georgia and is ready for distribution to fire departments nationwide.
The introduction of SoyFoam™ comes at a crucial time as concerns over PFAS pollutants continue to rise. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reported widespread PFAS contamination, which is linked to several serious health issues, including cancers and thyroid dysfunction. By adopting biobased products like SoyFoam™, fire departments have an opportunity to significantly reduce their environmental impact while enhancing the safety of their personnel.
In recognition of International Firefighters’ Day on May 4, the soy checkoff is encouraging local farmers to advocate for the adoption of SoyFoam™ in their community’s fire departments, promoting both the health of firefighters and the sustainability of local ecosystems.
