The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and Kansas State University Olathe Innovation Campus are launching a new program to accelerate the approval process for animal feed ingredients while maintaining rigorous safety standards.

The Scientific Review of Ingredient Submissions (SRIS) program, approved by AAFCO membership in January 2025, aims to evaluate new ingredients at twice the speed of traditional methods. This innovative approach is designed to benefit regulators, animal nutrition leaders, and the broader animal food community.

"The SRIS program marks a pivotal milestone in a new era of innovation and efficiency for the animal food industry," said Austin Therrell, executive director of AAFCO.

Under the new process, AAFCO will direct submissions to a scientific review panel assembled by K-State Olathe. The panel, comprising experts from universities and independent consultants, will evaluate ingredients and provide recommendations for final approval.

Approved ingredients will be added to AAFCO's Official Publication, widely recognized as the comprehensive list of approved feed ingredients by regulatory agencies and industry professionals.

AAFCO plans to begin accepting applications later this year, with the program complementing the FDA's Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) Notice program and replacing AAFCO's previous Ingredient Definition Request process.
