Volac Wilmar Feed Ingredients has introduced a new addition to its line of rumen-protected fats, Mega-Fat 70, designed to enhance both farm and feed mill performance. The product is a calcium salt formulation containing 70% palmitic (C16:0) and 20% oleic (C18:1) fatty acids, offering a balanced solution for dairy farmers looking to optimize milk production and cattle health.
Dr. Richard Kirkland, the company's Global Technical Manager, highlighted the product’s unique benefits, emphasizing that it sits in the middle of the Megalac range, which includes a variety of calcium salt and high-melting point fat products.
“The blend of palmitic and oleic acids in Mega-Fat 70 provides a highly effective formulation,” said Dr. Kirkland. “Palmitic acid enhances milk fat production, while oleic acid supports body condition, fertility, and improved fat digestibility, which boosts energy supply.”

- C16:0 Content: A concentrated source of palmitic acid to stimulate milk fat production.
- C18:1 Content: Retains 20% oleic acid for better body condition and fat digestibility, offering a balanced fat supplement throughout lactation.
Additionally, Mega-Fat 70 offers significant benefits to feed mills, especially for pellet production. According to Dr. Kirkland, unlike standard prill or flake products that melt at around 60°C and soften pellets, Mega-Fat 70’s calcium salt formulation remains stable, producing more durable pellets—a key feature for maintaining quality, particularly in warmer months.
The product is rumen-protected, which allows it to deliver energy efficiently without negatively affecting fibre digestibility or contributing to rumen acidosis, often associated with starchy energy sources.
“Mega-Fat 70 provides a one-product solution for fatty acid supplementation across the entire lactation period, enhancing milk production and overall cattle health while offering ease of use for feed mills,” added Dr. Kirkland.
