Hemp seed meal is an emerging feed ingredient that has generated considerable interest due to its rich nutritional profile, sustainability and potential to replace traditional protein sources. As more focus shifts toward sustainable and eco-friendly practices in animal farming, hemp has gained traction for its benefits, and due to its potential to improve the overall health of livestock. However, the use of hemp seed meal in livestock diets comes with its share of challenges, including regulatory concerns, potential health risks and its social image.

Hemp seed meal is a byproduct of the cold-pressing process used to extract oil from hemp seeds. It is rich in protein (about 30-40%) and contains a favorable amino acid profile, including all nine essential amino acids. Its protein content is comparable to that of more conventional protein sources, making it a promising alternative in regions where these are not readily available, or their price is prohibitive. Additionally, hemp seed meal is rich in essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3, which are known to support cardiovascular health and reduce inflammation in animals.
