Co-Alliance Closes Remington, IN, Grain Elevator

Age of facility, inability to install proper safety measures primary reasons for closure

Co-Alliance’s grain elevator in Remington, IN, had its last day of business on Friday, Aug. 31, reports the Rennselaer Republican.

Manager Russ Hammer said the primary reason for this closure included the elevator’s age and an inability to install the proper safety measures inside.

Customers and some employees will move operations to the company’s grain elevator in Goodland, IN.

Hammer told the Republican the elevator was originally built sometime around the mid-1950s. Over the years, there have been various issues and repairs, as well as efforts to keep up to standards overseen by the company’s Safety Committee.

The company contacted several firms to update safety measures, but each concluded there could be no guarantee explosions could be well-suppressed with whatever design was installed in the structure.
