Emergency crews extinguished a smoldering fire at the Piqua Farmers COOP on September 24, destroying approximately 35 tons of corn gluten pellets but causing no injuries or major structural damage.
Firefighters responded to the grain bin fire around 1:29 p.m. and carefully emptied the bin to avoid stirring up dust that could create an explosion hazard. Residents were temporarily evacuated from the area as a precaution.
By 3:28 p.m., crews had extinguished most of the fire and were checking for hot spots. U.S. Highway reopened shortly after, and residents returned to their homes.
Emergency operations concluded at 6:45 p.m. Multiple agencies responded, including fire departments from Woodson County, Yates Center, Iola and Allen County, along with county emergency management, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the State Fire Marshal Office.
