Corn acreage rises and soybeans fall in latest USDA report

Corn stocks are down 7% from last year, while soybean stocks are up 4%, driven by a sharp rise in off-farm holdings.

U.S. corn plantings climbed to 95.2 million acres in 2025, up 5% from last year, while soybean acreage dropped 4% to 83.4 million acres, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Acreage report released June 30.

Corn growers expect to harvest 86.8 million acres, also up 5% from 2024, with biotech varieties making up 94% of planted acres. Soybean harvest area is projected at 82.5 million acres, with 96% of acres planted using herbicide-resistant seed.

Wheat plantings totaled 45.5 million acres, down 1% from 2024. Winter wheat was nearly steady at 33.3 million acres, while other spring wheat declined 5% to 10.0 million acres. Durum wheat rose 2% to 2.11 million acres.

Grain stocks data show notable shifts:

  • Corn stocks were down 7% year-over-year at 4.64 billion bushels, with a 16% drop in on-farm stocks and a 6% rise off-farm.
  • Soybean stocks rose 4% to 1.01 billion bushels, driven by an 18% increase in off-farm holdings.
  • All wheat stocks jumped 22% to 851 million bushels; durum wheat stocks climbed 32%.

Rice stocks also posted gains. Rough rice totaled 69.7 million cwt, up 15%, with on-farm stocks up 94%. Milled rice stocks reached 6.09 million cwt, a 26% increase from 2024.
