Vietnam’s Pork Imports Double From Last Year
- Vietnam is also dealing with African swine fever.
- January through November, pork imports totaled 110,000 tonnes.
- This is more than double last year’s volume over the same period.
- The virus is present in every province in Vietnam, but new outbreak reporting has slowed.
- Imports are expected to remain high in the coming months as the country tries to rebuild its herd.
- Live pig prices have nearly tripled this year.
- FBN’s Take On What It Means For The Farmer: Vietnam will continue to need pork supplies in the near term as it continues to battle with African swine fever. However, the US has not been a key beneficiary. US pork exports to Vietnam are down nearly 54%, year over year, with Canada and Brazil being the key beneficiaries although the EU is the largest supplier of pork imports for Vietnam. However, the US is benefiting through increased poultry trade, which is up nearly 19% from last year. Vietnam will continue to need to source meat as it works to rebuild its hog herd.
Russia Releases Preliminary 2019 Harvest Data
- Wheat tonnage is estimated at 74.3 million tonnes.
- That is up from last year and near USDA’s December estimate.
- Barley harvest is estimated at 20.5 million tonnes, up noticeably from last year’s short harvest and tight global balance sheet.
- Corn harvest also was higher near 14 million tonnes.
- Pulse harvest was in line with last year’s total at 3.3 million tonnes.
- Russia essentially harvested larger crops for most major grains.
- FBN’s Take On What It Means For The Farmer: The larger harvest from Russia will compete with US products, especially wheat. The good news is that Russia’s wheat balance sheet had smaller beginning stocks this year, with the larger crop not offsetting the decline in stocks. This is expected to turn international business to the US into the 2020 calendar year.
