Growth Energy, the nation's largest biofuel trade association, has commended California Governor Gavin Newsom for including E15 in his recent budget proposal. The higher biofuel blend, consisting of 15% American-made bioethanol, could potentially help California achieve its goals of reducing fuel costs and decarbonizing its light-duty vehicle fleet.

Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy, expressed gratitude for Governor Newsom's leadership, stating, "We thank Gov. Newsom for his leadership and for including E15 in his budget proposal. We look forward to working with the state to complete the approval process and finally give Californians access to this more affordable engine-smart, earth-kind fuel option."

Key points about E15:

  1. Approved by the EPA for use in vehicles made in 2001 and newer, covering over 96% of vehicles on the road today.
  2. Available at over 3,700 gas stations across 33 states, but currently not legal for sale in California.
  3. Offered savings of 10 to 30 cents per gallon compared to regular E10 fuel last summer, with some areas seeing savings up to a dollar per gallon.
  4. Potential nationwide adoption could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17.62 million tons annually, equivalent to removing 3.85 million vehicles from the road.
  5. Projected to save consumers $20.6 billion in annual fuel costs, increase household income by $36.3 billion, and generate $66.3 billion for U.S. GDP if adopted nationwide.

The inclusion of E15 in California's budget proposal marks a significant step towards potentially introducing this biofuel blend to the state's consumers. If approved, it could offer Californians a more affordable and environmentally friendly fuel option while aligning with the state's climate goals.
