Scoular Acquires Farmers Grain Facility in Julesburg, CO

Kontny Grain offers 1.7 million bushels of storage capacity

The Scoular Company of Omaha, NE, and Farmers Grain Company (known locally as Kontny Grain) of Julesburg, CO, jointly announce that Scoular has acquired the grain assets of Farmers Grain in Julesburg. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Rick Matousek, who oversees several Scoular grain facilities in western Nebraska, including a shuttle train loader just 25 miles from Julesburg, says the company is committed to continuing Farmers Grain’s long history of service to area farmers.

“We’re pleased to continue the Kontny family’s business established 75 years ago, providing high quality service and a competitive market for locally grown crops,” says Matousek. “In addition to corn and wheat, we will also handle millet, soybeans, and milo to make the most of the Julesburg facility’s 1.7 million bushels of storage capacity.”

Jim Kontny, who owned and managed the Julesburg operation prior to Scoular’s purchase, is retiring from the business.

“I’ve enjoyed taking care of our farmer-customers over the years," says Kontny. "Some are now the third generation of their family to do business with Kontny Grain. I’m pleased to see that the business my family started so long ago will continue to be part of our community under the ownership of a fine company like Scoular.”
