U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pennsylvania, has been diagnosed with cancer.
Thomspon, 64, announced his diagnosis to his constituents on December 5.
He issued the following statement: “After a routine physical and subsequent tests, I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. While this diagnosis is a surprise, I feel well, and I will continue my work representing the people of Pennsylvania’s 15th District.
“Anyone who’s worked with me knows I am a person of faith as well as an eternal optimist, both of which will guide me as I undergo treatment. I am grateful to my medical team, my family, everyone I work with and represent in Congress. My faith in God is strong and I will tackle this head-on. I appreciate both prayers and privacy during this time.”
Thompson has been serving as a member of the House of Representatives since 2009.
He assumed the chairmanship of the House Agriculture Committee in 2023 after serving the previous two years as the committee’s ranking member. Thompson swapped roles with Rep. David Scott, D-Georgia, earlier this year when the Republican Party took over as the majority party in the chamber.
Prior to becoming the ranking member, Thompson served as the chairman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Forestry, Conservation and Energy.
