Six high school and college students from across the U.S. Midwest and Canada each will receive a $5,000 scholarship funded by Scoular’s CEO and his wife.

On Monday, Scoular announced the inaugural recipients of the Paul & Julie Maass Scholarship. Children and/or dependents of Scoular’s and Petsource by Scoular’s hourly employees were eligible to apply.

Selection was based upon a variety of factors, including need, leadership in academics and the community, and grade point average, with preference to those demonstrating compassion and community service.

Among the recipients: speech champions, honor band and honor choir members, volunteer firefighters and members of Canada’s Cadet program.

“These six young leaders embody the Scoular values of compassion and perseverance – congratulations to them and to their parents,” Paul Maass said.

“My wife, Julie, and I are thrilled to support our employees by providing these scholarships, and we look forward to seeing great things from these students in the future.”

The recipients are:

  • Cassidy Duerr, full-time high school student and part-time office assistant in Salina, KS
  • Cortney Holt, daughter of Bobby Holt, a merchandiser assistant in Sidney, NE
  • Alexis Jimenez, daughter of Diamond Jimenez, a sales assistant in Downers Grove, IL
  • Erin Moore, granddaughter of Debra Moore, a hedge desk specialist in Overland Park, KS
  • Anna Nahosha, daughter of Tetiana Nahosha, a warehouse worker in Tisdale, SK
  • Shawnelle Smith, daughter of Jason Smith, a route driver in Pittsburg, KS

The scholarships will assist in funding tuition, books and certain other expenses incurred at a four-year accredited university or two-year accredited institutions of higher learning.
