Avian Influenza (AI) can affect all species of birds in intensive poultry-rearing systems, but young laying hens are usually the most affected species. Free-living birds may carry the influenza virus without becoming ill due to natural resistance. Boehringer webinar logoIt is well documented that wild waterfowl are a natural reservoir for these viruses and can spread the infection to domestic poultry. AI is a very serious and ongoing concern for the global poultry industry and the general population’s worries about the disease are often misplaced.

In this exclusive webinar, Dr. Stéphane Lemière, Head of Global Technical Services Poultry at Boehringer Ingelheim, and Dr. David E. Swayne, owner of Birdflu Veterinarian will discuss the spread of AI viruses and how subtypes impact susceptible poultry species.

This webinar will broadcast at 7:00 AM CDT (Chicago) / 1:00 PM BST (London) / 8:00 PM CST (Beijing).

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN:

  1. Spread of AI viruses from farm to farm is mainly by mechanical transfer of infective manure.
  2. To date only viruses for H5 and H7 subtypes have been shown to cause HPAI in susceptible species.
  3. Direct contact between wild birds and poultry is not always necessary for the introduction of viruses into poultry farms.
  4. Evidence suggests that certain avian influenza virus subtypes of low pathogenicity may mutate to highly pathogenic virus strains.

This webinar is sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim and presented by WATTPoultry.
