Record rainfall
The USDA reports the July 4 weekend brought heavy showers to several areas, including the northern plains, portions of the Great Lakes region and the Southeast, including record setting rainfalls in many regions.
Heat has returned to the central and southern plains and South record highs recorded throughout those regions.
Wheat harvest continues
The wheat harvest continues as crop maturity advances.
- Winter wheat as 63% harvested; two points ahead of the five-year average
- 44% of spring wheat acres are headed; 33 points below the five-year average
- 70% are in good-to-excellent condition; 54 points above last year
Barley, oats and corn
- Barley acres are 63% headed; 10 points behind the five-year average
- 59% are in good-to-excellent condition; 34 points above last year
- Oat acres are 78% headed; 12 points below the five-year average
- 58% are in good-to-excellent condition; 23 points above last year
- Corn development is highly variable within some fields
- 15% of corn acres are still silking; 10 points behind the five-year average
- 64% are in good-to-excellent condition; one point behind last year
