Dry conditions continue
The USDA's July 19 drought monitor bulletin reports dry weather in the Midwest and Northeast as well as the western and central U.S.
The Pacific Coast to the Plains experienced hotter-than-normal temperatures.
This negatively impacted crops in areas affected by drought, specifically California to the central and southern plains.
The lower Great Lakes region and the middle and southern Atlantic States experienced cooler-than-normal temperatures.
Showers fell in the four corners, Gulf Coast, Southern Atlantic and Great Lakes states.
Wheat harvest continues
The wheat harvest continues as crop maturity advances.
- Winter wheat is 70% harvested; one point behind the five-year average
- 68% of spring wheat acres are headed; 22 points behind the five-year average
- 71% are in good-to-excellent condition; 60 points above last year
Barley and oat conditions
- Barley acres are 79% headed; 8 points behind the five-year average
- 59% are in good to excellent condition; 32 points above last year
- Oat acres or 12% harvested; 4 points behind the five-year average
- 57% are in good-to-excellent condition; 22 points above last year
Corn development
- Corn development is highly variable within some fields
- 37% of corn acres are silking; 11 points behind the five-year average
- 64% are in good-to-excellent condition; one point behind last year
