The USDA's July 26 bulletin reports hot and mostly dry weather throughout the middle parts of the nation with some of the most serious conditions impacting crops focused in the central and southern plains to the Mississippi Delta.
Above-average temperatures prevailed nationwide, while precipitation was scarce along the West Coast and Central region.
Timely rainfall did occur in parts of the eastern corn belt and southeast regions.
Wheat harvest continues
The wheat harvest continues as crop maturity advances.
- Winter wheat is 77% harvested; 3 points behind the five-year average
- 86% of spring wheat acres are headed; 10 points behind the five-year average
- 68% are in good-to-excellent condition; 59 points above last year
Barley and oat conditions
- Barley acres are 93% headed; 2 points behind the five-year average
- 55% are in good-to-excellent condition; 33 points above last year
- Oat acres or 22% harvested; 3 points behind the five-year average
- 57% are in good-to-excellent condition; 19 points above last year
Corn development
- Corn development is highly variable within some fields
- 62% of corn acres are silking; 8 points behind the five-year average
- 61% are in good-to-excellent condition; 3 points behind last year
