US Could Lose Top Corn Exporter Spot

Losing ground to Brazil as infrastructure ages

Nature 3101077 640

Reuters' Mark Weinraub reported on the possibility that Brazil will overtake the United States as the top corn exporter within five to 10 years. America has already lost its place as the top wheat exported to Russia and top soybean exporter to Brazil. The reason, aging infrastructure in the U.S., low commodity prices and the U.S. rejection of trade deals. Meanwhile, Brazil has invested billions in its ports and continues to invest in its infrastructure. That along with its size and naturally warmer weather means that Brazil will compete with the U.S. for the number one spot in the near future.
