President Donald Trump on Thursday backed off his threat to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border, reports Politico.
Talking to reporters in the White House, Trump said he would instead give Mexico a “one-year warning” to stop the flow of drugs into the United States and that he would first impose auto tariffs before closing the border.
The reversal comes after fellow Republicans, business groups and even some of his own aides warned him of dire economic consequences.
“We are relieved by the administration’s announcement that there will not be an immediate closure of our border with Mexico," American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall says. "That is good news on two fronts – trade and access to agricultural workers. When it comes to trade, Mexico is an essential partner and we will continue to push for congressional approval of the USMCA trade agreement.”
