Purdue University Grain Dust Explosion Report

The latest Purdue University Agricultural Dust Explosion Report for 2019 says there were nine grain dust explosions reported in the U.S. in 2019, according to Kingsly Ambrose, associate professor, Purdue University.

This compares to 12 in 2018 and a 10-year average of 8.5 explosions.

Other notes of interest:

  • There were one fatality and seven injuries
  • The explosions were in three feed mills, one ethanol plant, two grain mills and four grain elevators
  • Probable ignition sources were identified in two case as fires, one as static electricity, one as hot bearing and five unknowns
  • Fuel sources were identified as four from grain dust and five unknowns
  • Dust explosions occurred in seven different states: three in Iowa and one each in Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Nebraska, and Georgia
