The American Feed Industry Association’s (AFIA) Leah Wilkinson explained the feed ingredient approval process during an AFIA TECHTalk at the 2018 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, GA. She explained the three most common ways feed ingredients become approved – being a food additive, generally recognized as safe or part of the AAFCO official publication.

Wilkinson, AFIA’s vice president of Public Policy and Education, discussed grievances associated with the bringing new feed ingredients to the market, noting that a survey conducted by AFIA’s Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER) found that delayed ingredient approvals cost the feed industry 1.7 million dollars/year.

While discussing how the feed ingredient approval process is complex and lengthy, Wilkinson said that there is progress being made. She explained that the International Feed Industry Federation and others are working to not only streamline the ingredient approval process, but standardize a process that is recognized by the United States, Canada and the European Union.
