When Bob Anderson handed his son, Tim, the reigns to Atkinson Grain & Fertilizer in 1996, they came with concise advice: Take it one day at a time.

On Nov. 16, the business will mark its 50th year with an open house in Atkinson, IL, reports The Dispatch/Rock Island Argus.

In 1968, when the Federal North Iowa Grain Company went bankrupt, Bob Anderson proposed buying the Atkinson elevator to his friends and family. In July 1968, the group bought the business and formed Atkinson Grain & Fertilizer.

In 1968, the Atkinson elevator had about 35,000 bushels of storage for grain and could unload about 5,000 bushels of corn/hour. The facility now can store more than 3.5 million bushels. Its eight dump pits can unload 52,000 bushels/hour.
