Illinois Grain Co-op Helps Rebuild Local Road

Topflight Grain Cooperative donates material leftover from grain bin construction

A cooperative effort between Willow Branch Township in Illinois and several other area entities – along with Topflight Grain Cooperative – is making a major road resurfacing on the south side of Allerton Park a reality this spring according to a report at the Piatt County Journal Republican.

Township crews are also clearing vegetation on the right-of-way to improve sight lines along the five-mile stretch of what is known as River Road. Officials say it will increase safety for motorists and pedestrians alike.

The rolling terrain makes E 1300 North Road a scenic byway for drivers, bicyclists and walkers, but has fallen into disrepair in recent years. The current project has resulted in the road being torn down and milled, and it now awaits a large layer of clay for its subsurface, material donated by Topflight.

“[We]s built a close relationship with Topflight Grain Elevator Company and worked out a deal with them to get all the excavated clay free of charge that they had left over from a major new grain bin construction last year," says Charlie Montgomery, road commissioner of Monticello Township.

The $150,000 project is being funded by motor fuel tax funds, and thanks to equipment loans from other townships is being done without hiring an outside contractor.
