The Washington Post’s Peter Whoriskey reported on shipments of grain coming from Turkey that arrived in the country as non-organic grain and left with the label “USDA Organic,” raising the price of the grain by millions of dollars. About 21 million pounds of the latest ship to be identified as having the false label had already been distributed before the deception was uncovered. Most of the grain identified by the post was on it’s way to become animal feed.

The USDA is looking into the the shipment and claims of the false labels, but has not released the names of the companies or shipments involved. According to The Washington Post around 50% of the United States organic grain is imported from other nations.
