Grain Engulfment Determined to be Cause of Death in May Incident

First responders found the man lying next to a grain cart

The Courier’s Jeff Reinitz reported a development on a fatal accident that occured in Wintrhop, IA. James Schweitzer died in May at Viafield Co-op due to what was called a “grain incident” at the time. The official cause of death is now known to be suffocation due to being engulfed in grain according to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Details about the incident are still under investigation and have not been released at this time. What is known is that Reinitz became engulfed in a grain wagon, was on the ground next to the wagon when first responders arrived and was later taken to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
