Registration is now open for four courses from the Grain Elevator and Processing Society (GEAPS) and Kansas State University (K-State) Distance Education Program. Three of the courses will help grain handling professionals develop skills to work more safely and efficiently, and two of the courses will build the skills of grain processing professionals.
These online courses run from May 30 – June 30, and registration closes Tuesday, May 23. Courses are open to anyone, even if they are not a GEAPS member or a student enrolled at K-State. GEAPS 520: Grain Quality Management
This course is a resource for anyone responsible for grain quality, including those who work with storing and conditioning, aerating, drying, pest control or mycotoxin management. Participants learn about quality control and measurement methods, and international grain-grading standards.
The course covers basic principles of grain drying, with strategies for improving energy efficiency. This course is recommended for anyone from facility operators to dryer manufacturers and sales staff.
GEAPS 542: Electrical Safety for Grain and Processing Facilities
This course provides a basic understanding of electrical safety requirements for grain elevators and processing facilities. It will help participants understand general electrical standards in grain facilities, including the requirements for electric motors and lighting, safety standards and why standards exist. This course will also teach students how to perform an audit, how to identify the classifications in a facility and how to hire qualified electrical contractors.
GEAPS 600: Overview of Milling Operations
This course enhances the knowledge and skills of workers involved in the milling process. It helps participants analyze the mass balance of material flowing through the mill and apply statistical process control techniques to monitor mill performance. Students will also gain an understanding of sampling techniques and tools to accomplish proper sampling, the impact of milling practices on flour quality and blending practices that meet customer specifications.
GEAPS 520 is one of six courses required for the Credential in Grain Operations Management (CGOM), and both GEAPS 520 and GEAPS 600 are required for the Credential in Grain Processing Management (CGPM). Learn more about the credential program on the GEAPS website.
Tuition for GEAPS/K-State continuing education courses is $685 for GEAPS members and $895 for non-members.
