Soybeans Burning at Gavilon Elevator in Missouri

Outdoor soybean pile continues to burn for 10th day

Fire 836635 960 720

Black smoke continues to roll off an outdoor soybean pile for the tenth day in a row at a Gavilon grain elevator surrounded by floodwaters near Phelps City, MO, reports the Progressive Farmer.

An outdoor soybean pile, which appears far enough away to avoid damaging the rest of the grain elevator, began smoldering as temperatures rose in mid-July and became hotter as temperatures climbed to around 100º F late last week.

A spokesman for Gavilon declined to say how large the pile is, but acknowledged that the best course of action is to let the beans continue to burn.
