Fire Engulfs Historic Wisconsin Elevator

Causes $10M in damage at old Globe Elevator in Superior

Fire consumed a more-than-century-old grain elevator in Superior, WI, on Monday, sending flames more than 150 feet into the air and creating a smoke plume that could be seen for miles around.

According to a repot at WISN 12, Battalion Chief Scott Gordon said three workers were in the old Globe Elevator removing wood when a spark ignited the fire.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The structure was said to be the biggest grain elevator in the world when it was built in the late 1880s. It was decommissioned decades ago and crews have been working for years to salvage wood.

Kiesow Enterprises of Valders, WI, had been working to dismantle the remaining structure.

There was an estimated $10 million of wood reclamation equipment on site, Gordon told the Duluth News Tribune, with only a Bobcat salvaged. He added that about $450,000 of wood that had already been sold by the owner was destroyed.
