Fire at Historic Grain Elevator in Minnesota

Crews confirmed fire stemmed from machinery used for demo

Crews extinguished a fire at the Bunge Grain Elevator near Van Cleve Park in Minneapolis, MN, Friday morning, reports KSTP.

KSTP Reporter Brandi Powell spoke with a spokeswoman for "Project for Pride in Living," the nonprofit in charge of the demolition of the grain elevator.

The spokeswoman said a crew at the scene believes workers were cutting metal storage bins when a spark flew.

Minneapolis firefighters were able to extinguish the fire shortly after noon and confirmed the fire stemmed from a "burned out belt" on a piece of machinery in place for demolition.

Built in 1935 and expanded in 1936, the concrete elevator was once the largest grain storage and handling facility in North America. It last operated in 2003.
