Ellingson Elevator Still a Family Operation

Minnesota feed mill has a fresh approach to century-old business

Despite a transfer in ownership two years ago, Ellingson Elevator in downtown Spring Grove, MN, continues to be a family operation says a report at AgriNews.

Kristine and Ryan Jepsen, along with farmers Michelle and Travis Schullo, as well as Spring Grove native Christian Myrah, have brought a fresh approach to the small-grain milling company that’s been in business for more than a century. Dean Ellingson and long-time operations associate Bruce Johnson are also still involved with the mill, as well as provide new manager Josh Mattson with operational advice.

The landmark mill sells Nutrena and Kent feeds for commercial farm operations and pets, as well as custom-sourcing and custom-mixed feeds, including organic and GMO-free rations. The company contends it’s able to provide what bigger feed mills can’t.

The elevator also caters to whatever niche that exists in the industry, by selling an array of custom-blend batches from rabbit, fish, dog and cat feed — to bird and lawn seed, and even wood shavings for farm bedding. Pretty much whatever you’re looking for, Ellingson will give it a shot.

The mill’s modern style of business looks to be in contrast to the three original structures that it still operates from. Named after the history of each, the Sylling & Myrah Elevator (built in 1885), Farmers Union Elevator (built in 1887) and the Spring Grove Stock & Grain Company (built in 1900) are all listed on the National Register of Historic places. The original grain company started in 1900, and sold coal, flour and feed.
